The bow tie monkey play or wall quilt is very easy to make. The monkeys and bow ties are fused to the fabric squares, using a fusible web and then the blanket stitch is embroidered around the shapes. Rick rack is sewn around the edge of the finished quilt. Buttons are sewn to the centers of the bow ties after the quilt has been assembled in place of quilting to hold the layers together.
The sample quilt has a total of nine monkey blocks – three across and three down. The size of the finished quilt is 24” x 24”. The finished monkey blocks are 6” x 6” with 1 1/2” wide stripping between them. The bow ties are made from nine different bright patterned fabrics. Instructions are given to make a quilt the same size as the sample quilt, but you can make as many monkey blocks as you would like to make the quilt larger or smaller. If you are making a larger quilt for a baby or toddler to play with, you may want to eliminate the buttons and do some machine quilting instead to hold the layers together. It is not recommended to sew buttons on play quilts for children under the age of three.
