These shoes are soft and sweet! They can be made as a plain style (charcoal shoes) or with any combination of the appliqués (the red/white/blue/yellow pair have all the appliqués - front, side and toe). The shoes keep their shape very well. Fabric is fused to acrylic or wool felt (wool felt can be a blend). Edges of shoes may fray slightly but it adds to the charm of the design. If you would prefer to finish the edges, you can hand embroider the blanket stitch around the top edges and the appliqués as shown in the ivory shoes.
The shoes are very easy to make - even for beginners! A plain pair of shoes without the appliqués will only take about thirty minutes to complete. Cotton, ultra suede and wool fabric were used for the outside of the sample shoes – almost any type of fabric can be used.
This ten page PDF e-pattern includes full size patterns, a materials list, instructions written in English, and step-by-step photographs. Shoes will fit babies from newborn to approximately 14 months. Four sizes of shoes are included in pattern. Optional instructions are given to put a non-skid sole on shoes for babies that are walking.
very cute cute shoes and easy to sew! Pattern was well written and easy to follow. My ONLY complaint is that these shoes never fit my 7 mos olds fat wide feet. I made the first one with the size going by the measurements and then kept going up in size. I ended up with several Christmas shoes that wouldn't fit. The last time I tried it I widened the shoe and opened the slit further down and still no success. If your baby has normal to skinny feet then this pattern is for you. BUT if they have wide thick feet as my boy does then skip it and find something else.
Cute and easy to sew.
Fabric for outside of shoes – one fabric for shoe tops & soles, and up to three different fabrics if making appliqués – see below for amount needed (almost any type of fabric can be used)
Felt (acrylic or wool) - color that coordinates with fabric/s on outside of shoes – see below for amount needed
Iron-on fusible web – see below for amount needed (sample shoes were made with Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 Fusible Web by The Warm Company but any fusible web for fabric will work fine)
1/4” to 5/8” Ribbon - four 7 1/2” pieces of satin, grosgrain, etc.
AMOUNT OF FABRIC, FELT AND IRON-ON FUSIBLE WEB NEEDED FOR SHOE TOPS & SOLES ACCORDING TO SIZES:
0 to 6 months - one 8” x 9” rectangle cut from fabric, felt and fusible web
6 to 9 months - one 8 1/2” x 9” rectangle cut from fabric, felt and fusible web
9-12 months - one 8 1/2” x 10” rectangle cut from fabric, felt and fusible web
12-14 months - one 9 1/2” x 10” rectangle cut from fabric, felt and fusible web
TIP: Iron-on web rectangle is fused between fabric and felt rectangles to make one pair of shoes.
ADDITIONAL FABRIC: If you are making shoes with appliqués, cut piece/s from fabric that are large enough to cut appliqués – fabric colors and sizes depend upon which appliqués you are using. Cut piece/s from iron-on fusible web the same size as fabric piece/s.
