Look closely at the pieced and applique blocks in this quilt and you'll see that each has a light colored strip that contains a signature. Sometimes called Friendship Quilts or Album Quilts, these can be made to commemorate any number of special events, from weddings to a graduation, or family reunions to a Red Hat Society conference.
Machine pieced blocks (Dogtooth Violet) alternate with applique blocks (Vice President's Block) to create this traditionally inspired quilt. The sample quilt was done in a thirties color scheme, but any scrappy color theme would work just as well. Use this quilt design to make your own special friendship quilt! Friends and family had signed the original 1930s & 1940s blocks used in the sample quilt.
The blocks for the original quilt were found in a trunk after Scarlett’s grandmother passed away, plus there are signatures collected from Scarlett’s own family and friends during in the 1990’s in the newer blocks. The finished size of this quilt is 101" square, but you can easily add or subtract blocks to make a different size quilt.
The top for this quilt can either be pre-made and displayed at an event for signing, or can be pieced from individual cuts of fabric that are signed in advance of assembly.
