These are so fun and quick to make! If you choose the machine applique, you can whip these up in no time. They make great gifts for friends or even to treat yourself. Get yourself a cute hanger or stand and make them for all seasons and occasions. They are so easy whether you hand applique or machine applique. The most difficult part is trying to decide what fabrics to use.
If you don't have a stand or hanger, they have a rod pocket along the upper edge so you can keep the top nice and straight while hanging by inserting a wooden dowel rod. You can stitch some plastic rings at each upper corner for hanging.
I guide you through the entire process from beginning to end. I explain how to do it with hand applique and machine applique. I also give you tips and ideas for variations using different materials. I also give you lots of tips and illustrations.
I've made my patterns very easy to read and understand. I give you a complete list of everything you will need to complete the project. I've broken everything down into step by step instructions and have included lots of full color illustrations. The pattern pieces are very crisp and neatly drawn using a computer program.
Personal & commercial use.
Small scraps of fabric for appliques
1/4 yard of light weight paper backed fusible webbing
3/8 yard of Fabric - for top, bottom, and rod pocket
12 x 12 inch piece of fusible fleece, I used Pellon brand
You can use quilt batting if you prefer, but you’ll want to cut it bigger to allow for shifting
2 strips of 2 3/4” x 30” fabric for binding
1 strip of 1 3/4” x 44” fabric for borders
Thread to match fabrics
Embroidery floss to match or contrast with applique fabrics, and for any special stitching
I like to choose floss that is brighter or darker than the fabrics, makes the appliques really pop!
1/4” wooden dowel rod cut to 11 inches long (if not using a quilt hanger or quilt stand)
2 - 5/8 inch plastic rings to use for hanging (if not using a quilt hanger or quilt stand)
Refer to pattern page for embellishment and embroidery ideas and suggestions.
The embellishments I use for eyes, mouths, bows, decorations, decorative stitching, etc... are just suggestions. You can use anything you want from wiggle eyes, beads, buttons, rick-rack, the possibilities are endless! I do recommend a good quality, washable fabric glue for anything you wish to glue down. I like to use Fabri-tac by Beacon.
Scissors, pins, sewing and embroidery needles, embroidery hoop, paper & pencil, paper or cardstock (for printing pattern pieces & making template), iron & ironing board, sewing machine, cutting mat with ruler & rotary cutter (optional but helpful), pressing cloth or piece of light colored, 100% cotton fabric for fusing your fleece to the top (depending on the brand you use, some fusible fleece instructions call for it).
You can use my patterns for personal use and to make things that you sell from your website, online shops, and craft shows.
