The bow tie monkey play or wall quilt is very easy to make. The monkeys and bow ties are fused to the fabric squares, using a fusible web and then the blanket stitch is embroidered around the shapes. Rick rack is sewn around the edge of the finished quilt. Buttons are sewn to the centers of the bow ties after the quilt has been assembled in place of quilting to hold the layers together.

The sample quilt has a total of nine monkey blocks – three across and three down. The size of the finished quilt is 24” x 24”. The finished monkey blocks are 6” x 6” with 1 1/2” wide stripping between them. The bow ties are made from nine different bright patterned fabrics. Instructions are given to make a quilt the same size as the sample quilt, but you can make as many monkey blocks as you would like to make the quilt larger or smaller. If you are making a larger quilt for a baby or toddler to play with, you may want to eliminate the buttons and do some machine quilting instead to hold the layers together. It is not recommended to sew buttons on play quilts for children under the age of three.

Materials Needed:

-Light to medium weight cotton solid fabrics – 1/4 yard light tan for faces & ears, 1/2 yard medium brown for heads/bodies, 1/2 yard bright red (or color of your choice) for blocks behind monkeys
-Light to medium weight cotton print fabrics – 2 1/2” x 5” rectangles of nine different prints for bow ties, 1/8 yard black/white check for corner squares, 3/8 yard black/white stripe for stripping (if you are going to cut the stripe fabric symmetrically for the strips between the blocks, you will need to purchase additional fabric)
-Light to medium weight cotton fabric for back of quilt – 3/4 yard
-Cotton batting – 3/4 yard
-Iron-on fusible web – 1 yard
-Jumbo rick rack – 3 yards yellow (or color of your choice)
-Sewing thread – black or color of your choice
-Embroidery floss – black, brown, tan and colors that coordinate with bow tie fabrics (you can use the same color to embroider around all bow ties or you can use different colors)
-Flat buttons with two or four holes – nine (you can use the same color for all bow ties or a different color for each bow tie). Buttons are optional.

There are seven pages of instructions, two pages of patterns and twenty-nine photographs.

*Note: These are downloadable instructions for making a baby quilt. Pattern pieces are included for the monkey. Since it is a download, you will receive this by email and it will also be located in the "My Library" section of your user account immediately after purchase.
