Case Study: Basic Boxes - 3 sizes
Description
The Case Study series revolves around a container design that is sturdy, yet soft. With a padded foam core and simple cuboid shape, the architecture lends itself to a number of storage and transport applications. The straightforward construction process involves basic sewing and crafting techniques. A number of looks from clean utilitarian to boutique designer are possible depending on fabric and embellishment choices.

The boxes are stackable, and the different sizes can be nested. The square lid is perfect for personalization with applique or embroidery, and is a wonderful way to show off a quilt block or needlework.
Patterns and instructions are included to make boxes in three sizes: small (5”l x 5”w x 4”h),
medium (7”l x 7”w x 5½”h), and large (9”l x 9”w x 7”h).

While this pattern does require a lot of measuring and cutting, it works up beautifully. I couldn't find 6mm craft foam, so I substituted 2mm craft foam sheets I already had, glued together in stacks of three. Worked just fine ! I printed it out, since my sewing Lab and computer are half a house apart, and just followed along. It took me a while, because I am terrible at measuring, but once the layers are cut, it sews together quickly and nearly intuitively. Directions are written and illustrated every step of the way, and they make logical sense. Once you make your first one, you'll want to make more, too ! I'm already plotting ways to use some of the piles of test stitch-outs I've sewn with my embroidery machine, as well as imagining my vast stash of fabric being used to create original, personalized gifts. If you can sew a quarter-inch seam, and can measure and cut squares, this'll be fun for you, too ! Lots of possibilities !
